Gurlek Nakipoğlu Highschool is located in Bakırkoy, Istanbul was founded and donated in 1999 by Mahir Gurlek and Hilmi Nakipoglu. There are about 1200 students and 43 teachers. Students enrol secondary school after an eight years compulsory education. It last four years. In the end of the first year students choose the area of subject they want to specialize in according to their interests or skills. The areas they can choose among are: Turkish and Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages. In the end of last year students have their University Exam, and may gain the chance to continue their academic education.


We are in the age of technology, information and communication. While mankind reached the level of "information society" we carry out our studies for our pupils to reach to have all the necessary facilities.
Each day, we see that information and technology develop, change and renewed. Accessing to information and communication resources picked up speed with the help of developing technology. Besides, education of people had priority because of the need of personal development in the process of globalization.
In the process of globalization and adaptation to European Union, the thing that will make Turkey more successful is the students who will follow latest developments and improve their personal development, We are proud of our students who will make our country to attain to the standards of contemporary civilizations. We try to educate and train our students as people who research and think creatively and critically . All the developments in education have put a new role to the teacher. Teacher is not only a transformer but also a guide to reach the information. We aim to bring up our students as the future of our country.


ISTANBUL
Throughout the history, many writers, historians and poets told about Istanbul which was the capital of several empires for 7500 years and is one of the most crowded eight cities of the world today with its population of nearly 12 millions. Lamartine defines Istanbul a city that connects Asia and Europe with the expression "The God and human, nature and art are always together there. They have created such a perfect place on the earth that it is worth to see."
A city ruling the continents Istanbul, known as capital of the capitals, was the capital of the Romans firstly and then the East Romans (the Byzantines) for years. After it was added to the Ottoman lands. The city was announced by Fatih as the third capital city of the Ottoman Empire and stayed as the same until the fail of the empire ruled nearly all continents. People moved to Istanbul from all over the world and the Empire. A cosmopolite public with Jews, Christians and Muslims living together formed. After 50 years from the conquest, Istanbul became one of the biggest cities of the world.
Architecture and art were great during the period of Kanuni Sultan Suleyman (Suleyman, the Magnificent). Mimar Sinan, who is known as one of the best architects of the world, built the mosques and other structures that are famous worldwide.
While Istanbul is preserving the magnificence of the past with honor, it also progresses to a modern future rapidly. Variety in Istanbul is really captivating its visitors. Istanbul which offers interminable nuances with its museums, churches, palaces, mosques, bazaars and natural beauties is charming its visitors with its cultural and historical richness.


Sultanahmet Mosque which is the symbol of Istanbul with its six minarets and also called as Blue Mosque because of the blue ceramics used for its decoration and Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) that is just at the opposite of the mosque and adduced amongst the most magnificent structures of all times are worth to see in Istanbul. Suleymaniye Mosque watching these two magnificent structures from another hill is one of the best examples of the Otoman architecture. Topkapi Palace located on a hill overlooking the Marmara and the Bosphorus was a residence and political center of the Ottoman sultans for 400 years. One of the most important values as a gift from the Byzantine to Istanbul is Yerebatan Palace (Basilica Cistern). This structure used by the Byzantine as water cister. Kariye Museum treated as one of the most beautiful works of the Byzantine period is still preserving its original decor ornamented with mosaics and frescos.
Istanbul is forming a magnificent mosaic with all these historical richness. Kapali Carsi (Grand Bazaar) with its structure like a labyrinth insists on carrying the tracks of the dreamy days of the past and, on the other hand, it displays the newest products of the modern world. Matchless waterside houses being lined up at the both sidesofthe Bosphorus built in 20th century. Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi Palaces, Rumeli and Anatolian Fortresses, traces of fisherman villages, restaurants and parks also will charm you. Its modern hotels, cafes, restaurants where samples of both Turkish and world cuisines and sometimes Ottoman palace cuisine are offered for your taste, historical bazaars and shops that are lying inside the matchless historical and cultural past make Istanbul also a place perfect for conferences and congresses. Istanbul will host as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010.






EDUCATION IN ISTANBUL


FORMAL EDUCATION
Formal education is the regular education conducted within schools for individuals in a certain age group and at the same level, under programs developed in accordance with the national education objectives.

Pre-School Education
Pre-school education covers children between the age of 36-72 months. Institutions can be established as independent kindergartens or as application classrooms affliated to giriş' vocational high schools for the purposes of practical training for students, and within other educational institutions.

Primary Education
Primary education covers childrenin the 6-14 age group. Eight-year primary education is compulsory for all citizens regardless of gender, and is provided free of charge in State schools.

Secondary Education
Secondary education follows primary education and covers general, vocational and technical high schools providing at least 4 years of education for the 14-17 age group. All students completing primary education have the right to attend any type of secondary education in line with their interests, talents and capabilities.


Special Education
The aim is to provide the best educational opportunities for individuals with special needs, to integrate them with society, and enable them to gain professional skills.

Private Education
Private education institutions are the institutions expenses of which are covered by natural or legal persons. They are subject to supervision and inspection of Ministry of National Education (MoNE). These institutions are opened and operated in accordance with the Law on Private Education Institutions.

Higher Education
Higher education covers al post-secondary programmes with duration of at least two years


NON-FORMAL EDUCATION
Non-formal education covers those who are currently at a particular stage of their education, who have left their education at any stage, or who have never had the chance to attend school.
Non-formal education is carried out through public education, apprenticeship training and distance education. Similar education services are also offered through vocational courses opened at vocational high schools and the by local authority.

ISTEF: ISTANBUL EDUCATION FAIR
ISTEF is a "project fair" that brings all national and international based education projects under its roof. Within the exhibition, projects developed by students and teachers of lower and upper secondary schools are displayed. Development of these projects serve to increase the quality of education within the institutions, as well as elevating the level of knowledge, ability and capability of students.

ISTANBUL EDUCATION AND CAREER EXHIBITION
Istanbul Education and Career Exhibition is organized every year at the Feshane International Exhibition and Congress Center, since 2008, with the initiaition of Local Education Authority of İstanbul.
This annually organized exhibition brings together various institutions in the field of education and training and students, which enables students to get acknowledged of higher education institutions and occupations. Students visiting the exhibition have the opportunity be guided and directed effectively for their future and career choices.

Visitors
Upper secondary and high school students, private and state university students, new graduates who want to take a career path, inititiators in the field of education, teachers and head teachers, parents of related students, media representatives, representatives and employees from the field,

Attending organisations
State universities, private universities, training courses for OSS, Career courses, Education and guidance companies for education abroad, foundations and NGO’s supporting education, public organisations, publications in the field, vocational education institutions.

A great number of projects under European Union - Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) and other type of projects has been carried out by both Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education and the schools in Istanbul.

SCIENTIST FOR A DAY PROJECT
The Project was carried out in 2007and 2008. It was sponsored by Bahcesehir University - Science and Technology College.
The aims of the Project is : To motivate the students to love science, To show them how a scientist works, To teach the students the ways of scientific studies,
To teach the students how to prepare, carry out and evaluate a Project and how to use imagination by preparing a Project, To get students understand the importance of group work.

WELCOME TO OUR COMENIUS PROJECT

We are 6 countries working together around a common project: Reading for travelling through the paths of life. This project tries to exchange ideas among the different teachers and students from the concerned countries to encourage our students to read as a way to open their minds and see the world around them.

-On the 20th of November 2009 “Reading for travelling through the paths of life” Comenius School Partnership project has been announced in HABER TURK internet press..

-On the 4th of December, 2009 author Buket UZUNER visited our school, we went to local library close to our school together. She talked about "Turkey and multiculturalism" and she has executed a conversation with the students to encourage them to read more books. Also, students asked questions from her book called 'Mediterranean Waltz' which was read by Spanish and Turkish students.
This meeting has been announced again in HABER TURK internet press on the 8th of December 2009..









Book Worms Competition

-Within “Reading for travelling through the paths of life” Comenius School Partnership Project, a competition will be held in our school which is called “Book Worms”. Students who wants to participate to the competition, will make the application until the 31th of December 2009, and the selected books will be read until the 19th of March 2010. In the competition, 100 questions will be asked about the selected books and the winner will be awarded with a surprise prize.

The Selected Books are;
1-Mediterranean Waltz-Buket Uzuner, 2-The Bridge over the Drina-Ivo Andriç, 3-Mediterranean (Sunrise)-Paniat Istrati, 4-The Alchemist-Paulo Coelho, 5-Crime and Punishment-Dostoyevski, 6-Don Quixote -Cervantes
